The ABB IPR/S3.1.1 KNX IP Router connects the KNX twisted-pair bus to an Ethernet (IP) network using the standard KNXnet/IP protocol. Occupying just 2 modular spacings (2 MW) on DIN rail, it operates as a fast line and area coupler with full filter-table support for main groups 0–31, enabling structured segmentation of large ABB i-bus® KNX installations.

The router provides 5 Tunneling Servers for simultaneous ETS programming and client access over LAN. Power is supplied via 12 … 30 V DC auxiliary voltage or PoE (IEEE 802.3af class 1). Standard KNX multicast can be disabled to allow up to 10 IPR/S 3.1.1 devices to communicate via unicast.

Key Features — Routing, Tunneling, and Network Integration

KNXnet/IP Connectivity

  • Routing: Links KNX lines and areas across the IP backbone with configurable group-address filtering.
  • Tunneling: 5 Tunneling Servers for ETS commissioning and visualization clients over Ethernet.
  • IP addressing: Fixed IP or automatic allocation via DHCP.
  • Multicast / Unicast: Standard KNX multicast can be switched off; up to 10 routers support unicast communication.

Installation and Power

  • Compact MDRC: 2 MW (36 mm) DIN-rail module — same footprint as line couplers and small power supplies.
  • Dual power options: 12 … 30 V DC from a KNX power supply, or PoE from a compatible network switch.
  • Low power loss: 1.5 W typical consumption.

Applications and KNX Integration

  • Multi-line buildings: Bridge KNX lines or areas over existing IP infrastructure without additional TP cabling between floors.
  • Remote ETS access: Commission and service devices on remote lines via tunneling from a PC on the LAN.
  • Visualization backbone: Connect server-based visualization or gateways to multiple KNX segments through one IP router per line.
  • ETS configuration: Import the official .knxprod application (Downloads), assign physical address, configure filter table and tunneling endpoints.
  • Power planning: When not using PoE, supply auxiliary power from an ABB KNX power supply such as the SV/S 30.640.3.1 KNX Power Supply 640 mA.

Choosing IP Routers and Line Couplers

For projects requiring encrypted IP communication, choose the IPR/S3.5.1 KNX IP Router Secure with KNXnet/IP Secure. For segmenting KNX lines on the twisted-pair side without IP, use the LK/S 4.2 KNX Line Coupler as a TP line, area, or repeater coupler with KNX Data Secure support.
